School Transitions

BSIS Transition Programs

At Bankstown South Infants School (BSIS), our well-structured transition programs, which include support for students moving from preschool to Kindergarten, an in-school transition program for those advancing to the next year level, and a specific program for Year 2 to Year 3 transitions, are designed to ensure a smooth and positive adjustment for students transitioning from early learning environments to formal schooling. High-quality transition to school programs require strong relationships and collaborative planning between families, ECEC services, schools, and communities to ensure children feel a sense of belonging in their new school community. We recognise that students flourish when they are socially, emotionally, and academically prepared to take on the next chapter of their educational journey. These programs focus on fostering relationships among children, educators, and families, ensuring that each child feels welcomed andsecure in their new surroundings. By providing engaging activities, orientation sessions, and effective communication with primaryschool educators, we offer vital support and resources that help students adapt to new learning environments and expectations, establishing a solid foundation for lifelong learning and social development.

Preschool Orientations

Preschool

Our preschool orientation sessions for newly enroled children aim to establish a strong sense of belonging as they begin their educational journey. Guided by the Early Years Learning Framework, these sessions create a welcoming environment where children connect with educators and peers. Through engaging activities, we foster relationships that support social and emotional development, ensuring each child feels valued and secure in their new preschool community.

In-School Transitions

In-School

Our in-school transition program supports students moving from Kindergarten to Year 1 and from Year 1 to Year 2. Kindergarteners engage in activities in Year 1 classrooms, while Year 1 students experience learning in Year 2 settings. This approach helps children adjust to new routines, alleviating the anxieties associated with the unknown and new experiences, while fostering a sense of community, building confidence, and promoting academic readiness.

Early Intervention Stay & Play

ei

Our Early Intervention Stay and Play sessions assist students transitioning into a support class in early intervention. These sessions provide a welcoming opportunity for children to adjust to a supportive environment, participating in play-based activities that enhance their social skills and confidence. By fostering relationships with educators and peers, we help each child feel at ease and prepared for their new educational journey.

Kindergarten Orientations

Kindergarten

We conduct three parentinformation sessions focused on school readiness, literacy, and numeracy. During the sessions, children participate in activities in the classroom, allowing for observations to be made. If any specific needs are observed, recommendations will be provided.

Preschool transition

Our preschool transition to Kindergarten program consists of three engaging sessions designed to help children smoothly adjust to their new learning environment. Throughout these sessions, preschoolers will explore the Kindergarten classrooms, participate in hands-on activities, and interact with their future teachers and classmates. This gradual introduction fosters familiarity and confidence, ensuring that each child feels welcomed and prepared for the exciting journey ahead in Kindergarten.

Year 2 to Year 3 Transitions

Year 2

Our strong transition program with local primary schools helps students moving into Year 3 feel a sense of belonging and familiarity as they prepare for their new school setting. Through visits to the primary school, children engage in activities with their new teachers and Year 3 classmates, allowing them to form connections before the school year begins. This hands-on experience eases the transition, fostering confidence and excitement as they continue their educational journey. Additionally, our strong partnerships with local primary schools enable us to collaborate closely, ensuring that the transition process is seamless and tailored to meet the needs of each student. By working together with primary educators, we can share insights and strategies that support children's individual learning styles, further enhancing their readiness for Year 3.
