Early Intervention

Early Intervention

The objective of early intervention is to maximise each child's learning potential and daily well-being, as well as to expand opportunities for the child to function competently in the community.

Our support class caters for up to 8 students per day, under 6 years of age, who have been referred to us by the NSW Department of Education.

Our team includes a trained Special Education Teacher as well as a Student Support Learning Officer (SLSO) and work under the guidance of our School Principal.

The early intervention program provides a structured environment where the children learn through play and intentional learning activities.  The learning areas involve gross motor skills, cognitive development & fine motor skills, social/personal development, receptive language and expressive language. These are the same as the developmental areas/strategies considered best practice for all young children. Focus is also given to providing children with a variety of sensory experiences to meet their individual needs.  The small class allows the children to learn in a safe environment where their individual learning needs can be closely monitored and met.

Our support class is part of the wider school community and where possible participates in whole school community events.

Our daily visits to the Preschool assist in developing confidence in transitioning between settings and increase opportunities to develop social skills with peers.

Our students work towards their own Individual Education Plan (IEP) and parents receive written reports on their child's progress at the end of the school year.

We support with the transition to school the following year and help families determine the best place for their child to further their education.

We regularly post photos of our students engaging in our programs on our school Facebook Page.

How to apply for the Department of Education’s early intervention support

Although at Bankstown South Infants School we have Early Intervention Classes, we do not offer the places.

You must contact your local school if you would like your child to get early intervention support. You can find your local school here - School Finder

Ask to speak to the school’s learning and support team, or the Learning and Support teacher. Try to get in touch with them in Term 2 of the year before you want your child to get this support.

They can talk to you about what is available in your local area and put in an application for support, with your help.

The school will be able to tell you what paperwork they might need for this application, such as a child development assessment, or a report from an allied health therapist.

A team of experts will look at all the applications and decide on them.

To be eligible for early intervention support classes or early intervention resource support, your child will need to:

  • be between three and school age
  • have an identified delay or a diagnosis.

As the number of children applying for places in early intervention support classes might vary from year to year, the department cannot guarantee that every child will be able to get a place. Priority is normally given to children who will be going to school in the next year.
