In human society and its environment (HSIE), the subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10, where students study specific historical and geographical concepts and skills.
In HSIE, students explore varied subjects in human society and its environment to learn about history, geography, people, societies and culture.
Students also have an opportunity to learn more about people and the societies and environments in which they live.
A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:
- research, gather and analyse information
- question and make judgements
- write for a variety of purposes.
In Early Stage 1, students examine their personal and family history. They engage in a range of tasks exploring their family’s heritage discussing the similarities and differences between their family and others; sequencing past events of their life and investigating artifacts and events of significance to their family.
In Stage 1, students explore past and present family life assessing the similarities and differences between their family and others. They also compare past and present life using historical stories and sources to discover changes that have occurred over time. Further, students investigate and appreciate the history of their local area.
In Early Stage 1, students identify familiar places and discuss why some places are special and important. They explore the significance of the environment to human life and how the environment should be looked after.
In Stage 1, students examine concepts of place, space, scale, environment and interconnectedness. They explore how spaces are organised for living and activity investigating the organisation of familiar environments. Further, they consider the significance of the environment to human life and the important relationship between humans and the environment.
