Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.
PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.
At Bankstown South Infants School:
In Early Stage 1, students identify personal characteristics and strengths and recognise how they are growing and changing and identify different parts of the body. They describe different emotions and practice interpersonal skills. Students identify people who can assist them and recognise actions that help them be healthy, safe, resilient and active.
In Stage 1 students examine the changes that occur to them as they grow older and describe their strengths and achievements. They explore the impact their actions have on other people and recognise and demonstrate positive behaviour. They recognise factors that influence health and describe how to keep themselves and others healthy, safe and active
Students participate in a range of activities as part of physical education developing their fundamental movement skills. SportsPro, an external sports provider, regularly runs Friday sports session at school teaching students a range of different games and sports such as gymnastics, athletics and dance.
Students also participate in a range of incursions as part of their learning in PDHPE including an NRL clinic, Unwrapped and the YPEP child protection education program.
